ATLANTA — The College of the Arts has announced that Ethan Tussey, director of the School of Film, Media & Theatre, has been named the college’s associate dean, effective July 1. Tussey steps into the leadership role as Associate Dean Susan Richmond returns to the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design as its new director.
“Dr. Tussey’s leadership at the School of Film, Media & Theatre over the past three years has laid a strong foundation for his continued success in this new role,” said Dean Chester Phillips. “His expertise in media industry studies, television studies, new media and cultural studies, combined with his scholarship, positions him to bring valuable insights and perspective to the college.”
“I have learned a great deal in my role as the director of the School of Film, Media & Theatre,” Tussey said. “I have enjoyed contributing to the college’s strategic planning efforts and working with Dean Phillips and the administrative team. I am eager to continue this work and serve the full college in my new role.”
Tussey is an associate professor of Film and Media at Georgia State University and earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2012. His book, “The Procrastination Economy: The Big Business of Downtime” (NYU Press, 2018), details the economic and social value of mobile device use in the context of the workplace, the commute, the waiting room and the living room. His work explores the relationship between the entertainment industry and the digitally empowered public.
He has contributed book chapters on creative labor, sports television, sports gambling, connected viewing and crowdfunding to peer-reviewed journals and anthologies. He is also the coordinating editor of In Media Res and the co-founder of the Atlanta Media Project. Tussey teaches classes on television analysis, media industries and digital media.
