ATLANTA — The College of the Arts at Georgia State University has appointed Susan Richmond as the new director of the Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design. Richmond will transition from her role as interim associate dean of the College of the Arts to lead the School of Art & Design, effective July 1. The school’s current director, Michael White, who previously led the school from 2012 to 2018, will be returning to teaching.
“As the interim associate dean, Dr. Richmond has masterfully served the college over the past two academic years. I look forward to our continued collaborations as she returns to the School of Art & Design,” Dean Chester Phillips said. “I also commend Michael White for his leadership and contributions during his second tenure as director.”
“I look forward to returning to Art & Design as its next director and stewarding initiatives that will continue to enhance the value of the arts at Georgia State,” Richmond said. “I know that my role is made easier by the incredible talent, achievements and dedication of our faculty, staff and students.”
An associate professor of art history, Richmond served as associate director of Art & Design from 2018 to 2023. Her research and teaching focus is on the modern and contemporary era, with a specific emphasis on feminist practices and the social and material histories of U.S. art, craft and visual culture since 1945. She is the author of “Lynda Benglis: Beyond Process” (London: I.B. Tauris Press, 2013) and has published in Art History, American Art, Arts, Journal of Modern Craft, Feminist Studies, Art Journal and Camera Obscura. With Jess Jones, associate professor of textiles at GSU, she is working on a digital mapping project entitled “Lost Weavings of Atlanta.”
