ATLANTA — The Ernest G. Welch School of Art & Design opened its graduate studios to the public Oct. 23 for MFA Open Studios, turning the Arts & Humanities Building into a site for creative connection and exploration.
Thirty-two graduate students took part, welcoming visitors into their working spaces to see finished pieces alongside work in progress. Across five floors, the event showcased graduate and undergraduate work in drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, textiles, sculpture and photography. Guests moved from studio to studio, speaking directly with artists about their materials, processes and ideas.
Student clubs, including GSU Print Club and Edgewood Sculpture Forum, added to the energy with sales and activations of their own, giving visitors the chance to take home work from emerging artists and support the student organizations that enrich the Welch School community. Exlucis Photo Club hosted a wildly popular Polaroid photobooth.
The breadth and rigor of practice on display reflect the Welch School’s standing as a home for some of Atlanta’s strongest emerging artists. M.F.A. Open Studios offered the campus and the wider city a closer look at the creative research happening in Georgia State’s studios every day.
