ATLANTA — Georgia State University held its second annual Postdoctoral Symposium Sept. 22, marking the conclusion of National Postdoc Appreciation Week. The event brought together the Georgia State research community, including 130 postdocs, faculty, staff and students to recognize and celebrate the contributions of postdoctoral scholars.
The symposium showcased an array of research pursuits with 38 compelling abstracts. These presentations represented the collaborative efforts of more than 11 departments and all five of the university’s research centers.
The event agenda included engaging lightning talks, poster presentations and a keynote speech delivered by Melvin Konner, the Samuel Candler Dobbs Professor of Anthropology at Emory University. Tim Denning, vice president for research and economic development at Georgia State, also shared insightful remarks, emphasizing the university’s continued dedication to fostering research that delivers real-world impact.
“The contribution of our postdoctoral researchers holds great significance in our university’s pursuit of knowledge and discoveries. Witnessing their outstanding efforts and contemplating the potential outcomes is consistently rewarding,” Denning said.
In recognition of outstanding presentations, several travel awards were distributed:

- Office of Postdoctoral Affairs Award for Outstanding Oral Presentation: Khalid El Saafien
- Postdoctoral Association Award for Outstanding Oral Presentation: Amelia Cuarenta
- Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development Award for Outstanding Poster Presentation: Di Pei
- Office of Postdoctoral Affairs Award for Outstanding Poster Presentation: Jéssica Matheus de Sá
- Postdoctoral Association Award for Outstanding Poster Presentation: Elba Campos-Lira
