Applied Practice Experience Coordinator Colleen H. Byrd connects students with meaningful, real-world public health experiences while also providing them opportunities to network, explore career pathways and engage directly with community partners.
When did you join the School of Public Health, and what do you enjoy about working here?
I joined the School of Public Health in November 2023 and have truly valued the opportunity to learn from and engage with the community through building meaningful partnerships. I enjoy introducing students to the diverse aspects of the public health sector, especially those they may not have previously considered. In addition, I am grateful for the work-life balance this role provides, which supports emotional resilience as well as personal and professional fulfillment.
What’s a typical workday for you like?
A typical workday involves checking and responding to emails, meeting with new community partners interested in joining our SPH APE network and connecting with current MPH and incoming students who are interested in pursuing their APE. I also spend time posting and updating various opportunities in ELEVATE, as well as prioritizing and organizing tasks for the week to ensure steady progress across all areas.
What about your work are you most proud of?
I am most proud of collaborating with public health organizations in the community to build a strong APE Community Partner Network that connects our students with meaningful, real-world public health experiences. I am equally proud of the various spotlight events and resource fairs offered by APECS, which provide students with valuable opportunities to network, explore career pathways and engage directly with community partners.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?
Beyond my professional responsibilities, I enjoy spending quality time with my family, gardening, engaging in community work, crocheting and baking. I also value moments of stillness, as they allow me to rest, recharge and stay grounded.
