Wenshan Yu, Assistant Professor in the Department of Population Health Sciences, helps students develop a genuine interest in biostatistics, solid quantitative skills and confidence in applying those skills to meaningful public health questions.
What inspired you to pursue a career in public health?
Public health offers fascinating, important research questions as well as complex methodological challenges. I was inspired by the opportunity to develop rigorous methods that can help address issues affecting communities and improve population health.
What attracted you to the GSU SPH?
I was attracted by the opportunity to work with GSU SPH’s outstanding faculty and students, its strong research resources and its collaborations with organizations such as the CDC and Emory University.
How do you describe your research to people outside your discipline?
I aim to identify and develop the most appropriate data and methods to answer intriguing public health questions. As new types of data emerge, we have unprecedented opportunities to document human behavior, environmental exposures and health outcomes. My research explores how this additional information can be translated into new knowledge and a deeper understanding of existing public health problems.
What do you want students to gain from your instruction and mentorship?
I hope students develop a genuine interest in the subject, solid quantitative skills and confidence in applying those skills to meaningful public health questions.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?
I enjoy spending time with friends, playing with my cat and playing badminton.
