ATLANTA – The School of Film, Media & Theatre hosted the 2025 Console-ing Passions conference in Atlanta from June 27 to 29, bringing together approximately 200 scholars, artists and media practitioners from around the world.
This three-day international conference featured 176 in-person presentations, more than 30 virtual presenters and a powerful keynote address by Bishnupriya Ghosh, Professor of English and Global Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara. As a thoughtful nod to Atlanta, each conference room had a themed name inspired by some iconic Southern cultural touchstones. On the first floor of the student center “Designing Women,” “Love and Hip-hop ATL,” and “The Real Housewives of Atlanta” were housed. The second floor continued this homage with “A Madea Conference Room” and “Fried Green Tomatoes.”
Centered around the theme of “Reproduction,” this year’s conference provided a platform for critical conversations related to media production, labor practices, technology and authorship.
2025 Console-ing Passions Committee Chair and Associate Dean of the College of the Arts, Ethan Tussey, reflected on the success of the event, “It was an honor to join a prestigious lineage of peer institutions that have hosted Console-ing Passions. It was a tremendous experience for our students and faculty as experts from around the world came together on the Georgia State University campus to discuss the latest research on issues of gender and media. It is exciting to engage with the groundbreaking scholarship that was presented at the conference and inspiring to think of the future collaborations that have been facilitated and framed by our conference organization.”
Console-ing Passions was founded in 1989 by a group of feminist media scholars and artists looking to create a space to present work and foster feminist scholarship on issues of television, culture and identity. The original board included Julie D’Acci, Jane Feuer, Mary Beth Haralovich, Lauren Rabinowitz and Lynn Spigel. Console-ing Passions is not a membership organization but is instead comprised of a board of scholars whose interests converge around the study of media.
