Colin J.M. White
M.S. in Artificial Intelligence and Business Transformation
-----
What made you want to pursue a master’s in artificial intelligence and business transformation?
I began noticing how frequently companies across industries were discussing and implementing AI. It became clear that AI was becoming more than a trend and would increasingly influence how organizations operate and solve problems. That made me want to better understand the technology, but more importantly, learn how to apply it to real business challenges.
What will the degree help you accomplish?
At this point, I see it leading to a career change. Given my previous experience, healthcare is a natural industry for me to consider, but I don’t want to limit myself to one path. Part of what excites me about the program is seeing where the skills I develop and the connections I make may lead.
What unique background and perspectives do you bring to classroom discussions?
I bring a combination of eight years of Army leadership, more than seven years in medical device sales, and a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification. Across those experiences, a common theme has been my enjoyment of solving problems.
My Lean Six Sigma training especially shaped how I approach issues. My instructor, four-time Master Black Belt Lee Campe, emphasized that Lean Six Sigma shouldn't be viewed simply as process improvement; at its core, it's a structured approach to problem solving. I hope to bring that mindset to classroom discussions while also learning how my peers approach problems differently.
What discipline-specific skills do you hope to build?
I want to develop enough understanding of AI and machine learning to understand how those systems work and their capabilities and limitations, so I can communicate effectively with technical teams. At the same time, my primary interest is on the business side: identifying problems, determining where AI can create value, and helping organizations implement performance improvement solutions.
Which artificial intelligence certificate did you choose and why?
I chose the Graduate Certificate in Generative AI and Machine Learning for Business because it aligns closely with what I want to do. I don't necessarily want to become a machine learning engineer; I want to understand the technology well enough to help organizations determine which AI solutions make sense for a particular problem and how those solutions can be implemented effectively. Combined with my background in problem solving, process improvement, and working with healthcare organizations, I see the certificate as helping me bridge the gap between the technical and business sides of AI.
Why is it important for you to learn how to leverage artificial intelligence in your field?
I believe AI will become increasingly integrated into how we work. I think of it similarly to the calculator: The value isn't simply in having the tool, but in knowing how and when to appropriately use it. AI has the potential to augment our abilities, allowing us to analyze information, solve problems, and perform certain tasks more efficiently. I want to understand how to leverage it responsibly so that it enhances human decision making and performance rather than simply using AI for the sake of using AI.
