ATLANTA—School of Film, Media & Theatre alumnus Timothy Richardson (M.A. ’21) is rapidly advancing his career, earning acclaim as both an actor and cinematographer—an artistic duality rarely seen in today’s film industry.
One of Timothy’s most recent projects is Emascipation, an award-winning film that has earned several accolades on the festival circuit. Written and directed by Tré Hazelwood, it follows a 26-year-old Black man who wakes up in a hospital-like facility diagnosed with toxic masculinity. Timothy leads the story as Kelsey.
“Working with Tré and stepping into this role felt like an exciting career evolution,” Timothy shared. “We immediately understood how the character, Kesley, served as a vessel for something deeper, and I was eager to explore that. I’m incredibly thankful to have been part of it.”
When Timothy isn’t telling stories in front of the camera, he’s crafting cinematic images as an award-winning cinematographer. This year, he earned Best Cinematography at the 2025 Black Girls Film Camp Awards for his work on Mime, a short film directed by emerging filmmaker Gabri Blankson. He also served as cinematographer on an upcoming psychological thriller from KJ Smith Black and Skyh Black’s production company, Blackhouse Media. Highlighted in Deadline, the film explores maternal mental health, with Timothy behind the camera and Donald K. 'MURPH' Murphy II as gaffer.
As he reflects on his artistic journey, Timothy shared how Georgia State University helped shape his artistic foundation.
“During my time at Georgia State, I grew substantially as an artist,” Timothy said. “Professors like FMT Director Jennifer Barker, Ly Bolia, Daniel Robin, and Associate Dean Ethan Tussey all played an important part in helping me cross the finish line. The program truly provides you with a strong foundation before you transition into the field.”
Timothy’s directorial pursuits are also advancing. Following the success of his recent projects, he directed his own film, Sanctuary in collaboration with Laniqua Collins Richardson. This project is now in post-production and is scheduled for a 2026 film festival run. The character-driven film examines the complexities of the mother–daughter relationship.
Timothy is represented by A.D.S. Management. With an ever-expanding portfolio of acting roles, cinematography credits and directorial projects, he continues to shape a dynamic career defined by versatility, purpose, and a passion for powerful storytelling.
