Name: Thamu Naw
Hometown: Yangon, Myanmar
Expected date of graduation: Fall 2026
Which concentration did you choose, and why?
My chosen concentration is in Health Policy and Behavioral Sciences with a minor in Psychology. I chose this path because I work closely with the refugee community, and giving back has been both rewarding and humbling. My concentration emphasizes health management, policy, program evaluation, advocacy and effective communication, which are crucial for helping communities thrive.
Why did you choose to major in public health?
Advocating for underserved groups and helping them connect with resources has been one of my greatest passions. My parents inspired me through their commitment to serving others, and my experiences at a refugee clinic and nonprofit organization showed me how public health can transform individual lives and entire communities.
What has been your favorite public health class at Georgia State, and why?One of the courses I enjoyed most was “Public Health Careers and Professions.” It gave me more than classroom knowledge. It connected me with people pursuing careers in public health and allowed me to learn from their experiences. It felt like both a networking opportunity and an inspiring look into the field.
Tell us about your campus involvement?
I currently serve as President of the Undergraduate Public Health Club, which brings together students interested in public health to discuss major issues and create opportunities for service, networking and professional development.
Where is your favorite place on campus?
The library is my favorite spot. It’s where I can focus and find quiet time for myself.
What advice do you have for incoming students?
For new students, my advice is to use the resources GSU offers, ask questions and get involved. As someone who started out shy, I learned that college is the best place to practice connecting with others.
What’s your career aspiration?
My career goals focus on steady growth and impact. I hope to continue building my skills while using my knowledge to contribute to society and improve people’s lives.
