Each fall, the Music Industry program kicks off by bringing all students together for workshops and conversations designed to set the tone for a successful year. This semester began with the MTM Kickoff Seminar on September 15, followed by the Soft Skills Seminar on September 18 with Professors Sweeten, Dias and Chelsea. Professor David “Burn One” Sweeten shared that these soft skills events are his favorite part of the semester—an opportunity to talk about what it means to be good people, build solid relationships and carry the basic professional skills that lead to success in the industry.
September also brought a series of standout events, including a Fireside Chat with Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey on September 5, four-time Grammy-winning super producer Sean Garrett on September 24 and alumna Fiona Bloom on September 30 discussing the business of publicity. Workshops this past month included Writing Week with Sean Garrett as keynote, Engineer/Producer Day and a vocal training session with Avery Floyd Jr. Performances have also kicked off with GSU students taking the stage at Fetch Buckhead (Sept 28) and at The Love Scene Festival at Mable House.
Looking ahead, October and November are full of opportunities for students to continue connecting, creating and performing. Highlights include Perspectives sessions on the business of radio promotion (Oct 15) and artist management (Nov 4), plus Fireside Chats with leading voices in the field. MTM students will also appear on stages across Atlanta: the MTM All Stars at the Convocation Center opening for Silk, Cameo and Christopher Williams (Oct 10), GSU Takeover at Fetch Old 4th Ward (Oct 25), MTM Presents at Student Center East (Oct 29), MTM x ATLanime Fest at Centre Parc Stadium (Oct 18) and the Center Stage x MTM collaboration (Nov 8).
The program continues to showcase its momentum and expanding presence both on campus and throughout Atlanta. The School of Music will also host its Music Major for a Day on October 13, welcoming prospective students to experience firsthand what it means to be part of MTM.
