Why did you choose the Georgia State School of Public Health?
I chose the Georgia State School of Public Health because of the coveted Health Promotion and Behavior and Graduate Research Assistant programs. Health promotion and behavior was a discipline I was interested in throughout college but never had the chance to embark upon, and with graduate research opportunities, I was further able to take advantage of the new and emerging field.
Which MPH concentration did you choose, and why?
I chose Health Promotion and Behavior because I am fascinated by its growing interdisciplines. It allows me to explore several endeavors while still contributing to efforts of health equity and uplifting aspects of the materializing Public Health 3.0.
What has been your favorite class in the SPH so far, and why?
My favorite class thus far in the SPH has been a tie between “Public Health Intervention Development” and “Fundamentals of Health, Leadership and Policy.” Both taught me invaluable things about effective health promotion strategies through critical thought and maximum creativity. I learned that it takes more than just surface-level ideas to find opportunities to discover gaps and advance health in underserved communities.
What advice would you give undergraduate students considering pursing an MPH at Georgia State?
Be prepared to be a part of something bigger than you! Getting an MPH at Georgia State is all about gaining hands-on experiences, collaborating with your peers and serving your local communities.
Tell us about your campus involvement?
I am proud to be a dedicated Graduate Research Assistant under Dr. Owen-Smith and Dr. Luo in addition to my studies. Currently, I’m working on a project involving a high school-led group called Global Youth Ambassadors in Clarkston, Ga. who advocate for English language learners through student research and policy engagement.
What’s your career aspiration?
I hope to work at a non-profit or community health center doing work in reproductive justice, sex education or maternal health.
