ATLANTA — Two leading researchers in the Institute for Biomedical Sciences at Georgia State University have been ranked among the most highly cited in the world, placing in the top 1 percent of all scientists and social scientists, according to the Highly Cited Researchers 2024 list by Clarivate.
Each researcher selected for the Highly Cited Researchers list has authored multiple highly cited papers that rank in the top 1 percent by citations for their field(s) and publication year in the Web of Science database over the past decade. The annual list identifies global research scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their fields of research.
Andrew Gewirtz, a Regents’ Professor in the Institute for Biomedical Sciences, is listed among the Highly Cited Researchers in 2024 for the cross-field category. He was also listed in 2022 and 2023. This is the seventh year that researchers with cross-field impact, those who contribute multiple highly cited papers in several different fields, have been selected.
Lanying Du, a Distinguished University Professor in the Institute for Biomedical Sciences, is also listed among the Highly Cited Researchers in 2024 for the cross-field category. From 2021 to 2023, she was also listed in the cross-field or microbiology category. The 2024 list contains 6,886 Highly Cited Researcher awards in 20 science and social science fields, presented to 6,636 individuals from 59 countries and regions who conducted research at universities, government agencies and other research institutes. Some researchers are recognized in more than one Essential Science Indicators field of research.
To establish the list of Highly Cited Researchers, in addition to citation activity, qualitative analysis and expert judgment were used to identify researchers whose exceptional and community-wide contributions shape the future of science, technology and academia globally, according to Clarivate.
