Name: Najma Dahir
Hometown: Decatur, Ga.
Undergraduate degree and institution: I earned a Bachelor of Science in Public Health at Georgia State University
Expected date of graduation: Summer 2025
Why did you choose the Georgia State School of Public Health?
I chose Georgia State University’s School of Public Health due to my positive experience with the institution during my undergraduate studies. Both the professors and the courses were engaging, provided clarity, and allowed me to be more well informed on the field of public health. Due to these reasons, I chose to continue my education and pursue an MPH at GSU.
Which MPH concentration did you choose, and why?
I chose Epidemiology because one of my goals is to combat health issues facing underserved communities and reduce the disparities they face. This subject focuses on identifying risk factors and understanding the distribution of diseases, which is a crucial part to prevention and control. Through this, I can more effectively research the causes of adverse health outcomes and develop interventions to eliminate them. This will in term contribute to increasing the health of vulnerable populations.
What has been your favorite class in the SPH so far, and why?
My favorite class so far has been “PHPB 7140: Health Promotion Planning, Administration, and Evaluation.” I really enjoyed the class and collaborating with my group members. We had a semester-long project developing a health program. The course highlighted the significance of planning and strategizing for every part of a health program—from the funding to the staffing, to the needs assessment. It was a wonderful experience overall, and I learned a great deal from it.
What advice would you give undergraduate students considering pursing an MPH at Georgia State?
My advice would be to take advantage of all the resources available to you. Talk to your professor, peers, advisors and make the most out of the time you spend here. Make sure to choose a concentration that you are passionate about and don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone.
What’s your favorite place on campus, and why?
The Georgia State University Library is one of my favorite places because I love reading in my free time.
What’s your career aspiration?
I hope to become an epidemiologist working with public health organizations such as the CDC. This career will help me achieve my goal of preventing disease and promoting the health and well-being of vulnerable populations.
