Name: Joeeta Joee
Hometown: Atlanta, Ga.
Expected date of graduation: Spring 2025
Why did you choose to major in public health?
I majored in public health because I felt it was a blend of my interests in STEM and the healthcare system. I also believe public health plays a major role in our everyday lives, even in ways that we may not think about, which is why learning more about the field was an interest of mine. I also want to help interventions and programs be more culturally relevant to different communities.
What has been your favorite public health class at Georgia State, and why?My favorite public health class at GSU so far has been “Collective Health, Race and Culture in Bahia, Brazil.” This class was taken during a study abroad trip to Brazil. This gave me the opportunity to get an in-depth look at the healthcare system in Brazil and compare it to the healthcare system in the U.S. I also loved learning about Brazilian history and culture!
As for a non-study abroad class, I enjoyed my “Introduction to Research Methods” class. This class helped me gain an understanding of the behind-the-scenes of research, and it was interesting getting to develop a research proposal as a final product for the class.
Tell us about your campus involvement?
I am currently the president of the Undergraduate Public Health Club. Through this club, I hope to provide undergraduate students with different networking and volunteering opportunities.
Where is your favorite place on campus?
My favorite place on campus is the fifth floor of the library. It is considered the quiet floor of the library, so it is the best place to sit and focus on your work. It is also great if you just need some peace and quiet in between classes!
What advice do you have for incoming students?
When I first entered college, I was very wary of taking initiative and taking advantage of different opportunities. I would tell incoming students to be brave, talk to the people around them and participate in different opportunities that come their way, even when it does seem scary! Pushing through the nerves and saying yes to things will bring you out of your shell and help you both personally and professionally.
What’s your career aspiration?
I hope to work in the public health policy field once I graduate. I also intend to pursue a MPH with a concentration in health policy!
