Raynell Washington, Assistant Director in the Center for Leadership in Disability and Director of the Georgia Association for Infant Mental Health, says the work that she and her colleagues are dedicated to is far from easy but deeply rewarding.
When did you join the School of Public Health, and what do you enjoy about working here?
I joined the Center for Leadership in Disability in July 2019, and five years later, each day still presents new opportunities. So much of my professional and personal growth is because of my colleagues and partners who have poured into me and the various projects and initiatives I’ve been involved in. I’m in awe of where I am today, and I feel incredibly fortunate to now serve as one of CLD’s Assistant Directors and the Director of the Georgia Association for Infant Mental Health.
What’s a typical workday for you like?
Typical? What’s that?! No two days are alike. Sure, there are the usual emails and standing meetings, but every day brings something new. Right now, I’m immersed in planning the annual GA-AIMH conference and planning for 2025. Can you believe we’re already talking about 2025?
What about your work are you most proud of?
I’m truly proud of myself for not giving up and pushing myself to reach new heights. I’m constantly striving to evolve, while learning to offer myself grace, understanding that my best may look different each day. The work we do at the center—supporting individuals with disabilities, championing the social-emotional health and well-being of young children and families, and training providers and students soon entering the field—is far from easy. It’s hard work, but it’s deeply rewarding.
What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?
I live for the weekend! There’s nothing better than opening the windows, letting the sunlight pour in, blasting music and trying out a new recipe to test my cooking skills—which are impeccable if I do say so myself. I also enjoy crafting and traveling.
