Growing up in Warner Robins, Georgia, about 30 minutes south of Macon, Baylee Culverhouse spent countless hours doing homework in her dad’s anesthesiology office. That piqued her interest in healthcare, but she knew she didn’t want to attend medical school.
As an undergraduate at the University of Georgia, Culverhouse majored in English and political science while minoring in music, focusing on violin performance.
“I was drawn to English, history, and writing,” she said. “Law gave me a way to incorporate that into the healthcare world.”
After earning her bachelor’s, Culverhouse pursued a joint M.S. in Health Administration (MSHA)/ Juris Doctorate (JD) from Georgia State’s Robinson College of Business.
“Georgia State’s College of Law offers a health law certificate, and the dual degree with Robinson allowed me to blend legal and business perspectives,” she said.
Culverhouse completed her MSHA/JD in 2021, but her class with Robert Eaton, a clinical assistant professor specializing in health law, policy, and healthcare finance, stands out to this day.
“Professor Eaton was extremely helpful in sharing the practical applications of everything we learned in his healthcare financial management and planning course. He also invited students to get involved in community organizations and network with healthcare professionals,” she said. “I keep that textbook on the bookshelf in my office.”
Robinson’s evening course schedule allowed Culverhouse to finish her joint degree in three years.
“I took classes at night, which was the only way I could juggle the MSHA and law school,” she said.
Currently, Culverhouse is an Atlanta-based attorney at Morris, Manning & Martin, where she primarily handles regulatory litigation for healthcare clients. Her work includes the acquisition of physician practices by private equity firms and advising clients on federal and state compliance issues, such as Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations.
“For instance, if a provider calls out a patient’s name in a waiting room or writes a name on a board, we advise on best practices to limit exposure,” she explained.
Before joining the law firm, Culverhouse gained experience in various healthcare settings through internships in the legal departments of Grady Memorial Hospital, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and healthcare liability insurance provider MagMutual.
The financial aspect of healthcare is heavily regulated.
Culverhouse’s coursework at Robinson has enabled her to address clients’ business concerns while also meeting their legal needs.
“I learned about how Georgia’s Medicaid program is structured, built state contacts, and laid a foundation for advising on Medicaid-related questions,” she said.
During her free time, Culverhouse serves on Grady Memorial Hospital’s Young Professionals Committee and is co-chair of Grady Health Foundation's CrossTies Gala. The gala benefits the hospital, which is dedicated to ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare for Atlanta-area residents.
