CLARKSTON, Ga.—Students in Georgia State University Perimeter College’s dental hygiene, nursing, and kinesiology programs and students from Georgia State’s audiology assistant certificate program will offer free health screening, care, and education to community members on the Clarkston and Decatur Campuses in October and November during two special Saturday events.
Connect to Care, a cooperative agreement funded by the Fulton-DeKalb Hospital Authority will help host two health care events from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 in the Clarkston campus gymnasium, and from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11 on the Decatur Campus. Both events are free and open to students, faculty, staff, and community residents.
Attendees will be able to get screened and tested for chronic health conditions and will receive referrals to partner health providers based on their insurance status and health needs, said Dr. Mary Helen O’Connor, project director for the initiative and director of the Clarkston Center for Community Engagement.
Dental hygiene students also will provide oral health screenings and fluoride treatments, and audiology students will provide free hearing tests.
“The Connect to Care Initiative will help our health care students engage with the community and learn firsthand how the health care system operates,” said O’Connor.
“Dental health and chronic health conditions continue to be some of the most unaddressed health concerns in many underserved populations in DeKalb County. By helping community residents get connected to care, our health professions students will be addressing critical health disparities and improving the overall health and wellbeing of the community.”
