CLARKSTON, Ga.—The Theatre Arts Guild at Georgia State University’s Perimeter College is set to stage “Squirrel Girl Goes to College: A Squirrel Girl Play (Marvel Spotlight)" for its fall production, Oct. 21-23 and Oct. 28-30, in the Marvin Cole Auditorium at 3735 Memorial College Avenue in Clarkston.
Written by Karen Zacarias, who was was recently hailed by American Theatre magazine as one of the 10 most-produced playwrights in the U.S., the play is based on the popular Marvel comics co-created by Will Murray and Steve Ditko.
The performance is the first to be fully rehearsed and delivered in person at Perimeter since before the pandemic.
Director Aaron Gotlieb promises an entertaining show and a special night dedicated to cosplay enthusiasts.
“We wanted to have a fall show that was fun, upbeat and something that everyone could enjoy,” said Gotlieb, who also teaches theater at Perimeter.
“It is especially important that we offer something joyful after the past few years of not having live theater. 'Squirrel Girl Goes to College' is the perfect choice for us right now. It is strange, silly, playful and sweet.”
“Squirrel Girl Goes to College” follows the adventures of Marvel hero Squirrel Girl, also known as Doreen Green, as she tries to make friends at college and succeed in her classes while hiding her super identity, according to CreativeDrama.com.
The Perimeter College production is showcased entirely by student performers and backstage crew.
“So many of the students involved are getting their first on-stage experience, having finished high school or started college under pandemic restrictions,” Gotlieb said.
“There is amazing positive energy in the team of performers, technicians and designers when we come together to create and play.”
Gotlieb is hopeful that theatergoers from throughout metro Atlanta will attend the production, which includes a cosplay night Saturday, Oct. 29, at 7:30 p.m.
“People who enjoy comics can be incredibly passionate about them. Atlanta is home to Dragon Con, one of the largest pop culture/multimedia conventions in North America,” Gotlieb said.
“There are a lot of passionate, creative individuals who love this genre and may never have had an opportunity to see it presented on stage.
“Offering a special night seemed like a fantastic way to welcome and include more people, especially since there are many talented cosplayers in Atlanta.”
Other themed events for the play include:
- Saturday, Oct. 22 – Perimeter College Theatre Arts Guild Alumni Night, including the opportunity to take photos with the cast after the show
- Sunday, Oct. 23 – Post-show lobby reception with actors and members of the creative team
- Sunday, Oct. 30 – Post-show discussion with Dr. Jayson Quearry, Georgia State University, School of Film, Media & Theatre; Topic: The History of Squirrel Girl in Multimedia and Her Character Creation Story
