ATLANTA – The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia has reappointed Mark Keil, John B. Zellars Professor of Computer Information Systems (CIS) at Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business, as a Regents’ Professor, the highest professorial rank within the state’s system of public colleges and universities.
Regents’ Professorships are bestowed on the most distinguished faculty of the University System, whose scholarly achievements are recognized nationally and internationally as innovative and renowned. Appointments are made by the Board of Regents on the recommendation of university presidents and reflect excellence in academics, research, scholarship, and creativity. Keil was initially appointed a Regents’ Professor in 2019.
Keil’s research focuses on managerial decision-making with a particular emphasis on IT project management contexts. His research includes work on preventing IT project escalation, improving IT project status reporting, identifying and managing IT project risks, improving project control, managing IT implementation projects, and overcoming barriers to system use. He has published more than 125 peer-reviewed journal articles in top academic and practitioner-oriented publications, and his work has received more than 24,000 citations according to Google Scholar.
Keil currently serves on the editorial board of the “Journal of Management Information Systems.” He has previously held a variety of editorial roles for journals including “MIS Quarterly,” “Information Systems Research,” “Information Systems Journal,” “Decision Sciences,” “IEEE Transactions on Engineering Management,” and “The Data Base for Advances in Information Systems.”
He is a past division chair of the Academy of Management. His recent awards include the Project Management Institute’s Research Achievement Award and the Association of Information Systems (AIS) Fellow Award, both in 2018.
Throughout his career at Georgia State, Keil has been recognized for excellence in teaching, research, and service, receiving Robinson’s Faculty Recognition Award for Outstanding Teaching, Faculty Recognition Award for Distinguished Contributions in Research, and the University's Alumni Distinguished Professor Award for outstanding achievements in scholarship, teaching, and service.
“Mark Keil is a tremendous role model and colleague for all of us,” said Robinson Dean Richard Phillips. “His impact as a scholar, his mentorship of students, and his tireless service to the Robinson College and Georgia State are as impressive as they are inspiring.”
Regents’ Professorships are granted by the Board of Regents for three years, subject to renewal to a second three-year term by the Board upon the recommendation of the institution’s president, the University System Chancellor, and the Board’s Committee on Academic Affairs. After six years, the professorship is renewed at the discretion of the university president.
Keil joined the CIS Department in 1991. He holds a joint appointment in Georgia State’s Department of Computer Science and a secondary appointment with Robinson’s Institute of Health Administration.
He holds B.S.E., S.M., and D.B.A. degrees from Princeton University, M.I.T. Sloan School of Management, and Harvard Business School, respectively.
