CLARKSTON, GA—Students needing a headshot or professional attire to prepare for their job search, can now obtain these resources at the new University Career Center on Georgia State University’s Clarkston Campus. The official ribbon cutting of the center took place Sunday, Sept. 11 and was part of a day of service on the campus.
The ribbon cutting kicked off a week of career events for students, including a Career Internship Expo on Dunwoody Campus. Both were attended by President M. Brian Blake and his wife, Dr. Bridget Blake as part of his presidential investiture week activities for the university.
“Although there are career counseling services on all five campuses and online at Perimeter College, there is now a central space for Perimeter College students to meet,” said Adelaide Richardson, Perimeter College’s assistant director of career services.
The new center at Clarkston has computers, workstations, an Iris photo booth for professional photos and a “career closet” boutique with professional clothing and shoes for both men and women, and represents an important resource for Perimeter’s more than 15,000 students, she said. On the Monday after the ribbon cutting, students gathered at the center to create career vision boards, to help envision what they needed to succeed on their educational career paths.
“I think there are so many benefits to having a career services center here,” said Lolia Harry, recent Perimeter College graduate and now Georgia State student who volunteered at the Clarkston event Sunday.
“It’s a place where you can get more insight and guidance about what happens after you graduate with your major—and where you can even learn how to get more experience in your major before you graduate,” she said.
Harry graduated with her associate degree from Perimeter in May and is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in education on the Atlanta Campus. She found out about a paid tutoring internship with AmeriCorps through Handshake, an online job and internship resource provided by University Career Services.
“We are delighted that we are able to expand our reach to our Perimeter College students. This comprehensive center on the Clarkston campus will serve students with the same resources that are found on the downtown campus including a headshot booth and a professional career dress closet. This certainly supports our new president’s College to Career pillar and enhances the ability for our Perimeter students to fully engage with it,” said Catherine Neiner, Georgia State University’s Director of University Career Services.
Interim Dean for Perimeter College Dr. Cynthia Y. Lester thanked university officials for the center being brought to the Clarkston Campus, where Perimeter College is a staple in the community. “Clarkston Campus sits in the most diverse square mile in the United States. It is home to over 3,000 Perimeter College students,” said Lester. This is so very important to our campus community and to our college as a whole. I cannot express our gratitude for placing the center here at the Clarkston Campus where we can do some very good work together.”
