Harcourt Fuller, associate professor of history, and Renee Schatteman, associate professors of English, have been named Fulbright scholars. The Fulbright Scholar program, which is run by the U.S. Department of State, is one of the most prestigious fellowships available for faculty doing international research.
Fuller will spend the summer in Jamaica and London researching a book on Queen Nanny of the Jamaican Maroons. The maroons were descendants of West Africans who escaped enslavement and created their own communities in the mountainous areas of Jamaica. Queen Nanny, who was born in what is today Ghana, led a Maroon settlement called “Nanny Town” in the Blue Mountains.
Schatteman’s project centers on South African author Sindiwe Magona. Schatteman will work on two projects. One is a monograph on Magona’s use of the concept of Ubuntu, which is a humanist philosophy insisting on the need for humane treatment of others and the recognition of people’s dependence on one another. The other is a volume of Magona’s essays, lectures, short biographical pieces and select interviews, which Schatteman will work with Magona to edit.
