ATLANTA—Georgia State University ranks in the top 50 colleges and universities of the 2017 Social Mobility Index, a rating of institutions according to how effectively they enroll students from low-income backgrounds and graduate them into good-paying jobs.
The university ranked 50th among 1,363 U.S. colleges and universities offering four-year degrees, the highest ranking of any Georgia college or university. The data-driven index uses multiple variables to determine its rankings, including tuition, economic background of the student body, graduation rate, early career salary and percent of students who significantly improve their economic standing after graduation.
Unlike other rankings that focus on acceptance rates and test scores for incoming students, the index focuses on the social and economic gains enjoyed by students who enroll at particular institutions.
“This latest survey confirms what many already know: Georgia State University is one of the most important drivers of economic change in Georgia,” said Mark Becker, president of the university. “Each year, thousands of students from low-income backgrounds enter Georgia State and become top earners after graduation, benefitting not only these individuals but their communities and the state.”
Over the past year, almost 10,000 students have graduated from Georgia State, an all-time high. Georgia State is nationally recognized for its student success initiatives, which have increased graduation rates, reduced the time to earning a degree and eliminated achievement gaps based on race, ethnicity or income. By using predictive analytics in advising, rethinking academic support, and creating ways to meet students’ financial challenges, the university expands educational opportunity and achievement.
