ATLANTA — For its 20th anniversary, the W.J. Usery Distinguished Lecture Series at Georgia State University’s Andrew Young School of Policy Studies will welcome renowned labor economist Thomas Lemieux, whose research shapes global discussions on wage inequality. He will deliver his talk, “Unions, Firms and the Wage Distribution,” Friday, Sept. 26, at 3 p.m. in Seminar Room 903/904 at 55 Park Place NE, Atlanta. The lecture is open to the public.
Lemieux studies how wages are determined and why inequality has grown in labor markets worldwide. His research focuses on the role of unions, collective bargaining and other labor market institutions, as well as the statistical methods used to analyze earnings patterns.
A professor at the Vancouver School of Economics at the University of British Columbia, Lemieux earned his Ph.D. from Princeton University, his M.A. from Queen’s University and his B.A. from Université Laval. He is widely recognized as a leading voice in labor economics, influencing both research and policy on the structure of modern labor markets.
“Thomas Lemieux is one of the most influential labor economists of his generation,” said Jonathan Smith, an associate professor of economics at the Andrew Young School. “I cannot think of anyone more appropriate to give the 20th W.J. Usery Distinguished Lecture. Aside from Dr. Lemieux’s impact on the economics profession, his work speaks to the very issues that W.J. Usery Jr. worked on his entire career.”
The W.J. Usery Distinguished Lecture Series at the Andrew Young School features leading economists addressing pressing issues in the American workplace. Launched in 2005, the series honors the late W.J. “Bill” Usery Jr., a former U.S. assistant secretary of labor who made lasting contributions to the well-being of workers and the American workplace and to the Andrew Young School.
