About Realist Evaluation
Realist evaluation is a theory-driven approach to evaluation that focuses on the central question of “What works, for whom, in what circumstances, and how?” Rather than asking if an intervention is effective, a realist evaluation aims to uncover the generative mechanisms that produce outcomes, the contextual factors that influence these mechanisms and the reasons why results may vary across different populations or settings — providing nuanced and actionable insights for policy and practice.
