ATLANTA — Melanie Guerrero-Blanco (B.S.W. ’25) has always been driven by a passion for advocating for immigrants, a commitment deeply rooted in her own heritage as the daughter of immigrants from Monterrey, Mexico. This passion led her from the rural town of Elberton, Ga., to Georgia State University where she sought broader perspectives and opportunities in the field of social work.
As she prepares for graduation, she is completing her practicum at La Amistad, a nonprofit organization that provides educational and support services for Hispanic students and families. This role aligns with her aspirations to support her community while exploring future career paths, including pursuing an Advanced Standing degree or attending law school to become an immigration attorney focused on the Hispanic immigrant population.
Guerrero-Blanco’s academic journey has been supported by various forms of financial aid, including the HOPE and REACH scholarships as well as a Pell Grant. A first-generation college student, she also received a Social Work CPUA scholarship from the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies by maintaining good academic standing.
Determined to maximize her opportunities, she joined the university’s B.S.W. Social Work Club in her junior year and now serves on the board as the communications manager.
In addition to her practicum, Guerrero-Blanco has gained valuable experience beyond the classroom. She spent two years at the Sonoda Law Firm, a criminal defense and immigration law firm, where she developed practical insights into immigration processes. She also participated in a summer study abroad program in Spain, which was a sharp contrast to her college beginnings.
As graduation approaches, Guerrero-Blanco is excited about what lies ahead. She envisions herself helping others from similar backgrounds and plans to mentor younger generations.
“I aspire to be someone younger people can look up to,” she said. “I understand how important it is to have someone who can guide and inspire you. I hope to show that with determination and the right support, they can achieve their dreams, regardless of their background."
