ATLANTA — William G. Resh will join Georgia State University’s Andrew Young School of Policy Studies as a professor and chair in the Department of Public Management and Policy (PMAP), effective July 1.
“Dr. Bill Resh is an accomplished scholar and seasoned academic leader,” said Dean Thomas J. Vicino. “He will bring a dynamic blend of research excellence, administrative experience and deep commitment to public service education to the Andrew Young School, helping to advance our mission in research innovation and student success.”
Resh holds the C. C. Crawford Professorship in Management and Performance at the University of Southern California’s Sol Price School of Public Policy, where he also directs the Civic Leadership Education and Research (CLEAR) Initiative that integrates experiential learning, student research and community-engaged research. The CLEAR Initiative will continue to be hosted under his leadership at Georgia State.
“Joining the Andrew Young School and leading PMAP is a profound honor,” Resh said. “I look forward to collaborating with our exceptional faculty, whose diverse expertise in public management and policy underpins every facet of our mission. With their support, we will build on the school’s distinguished legacy of scholarship, community engagement and its portfolio of research centers. With CLEAR joining this enterprise, we will harness experiential learning, innovative research and Atlanta’s vibrant civic ecosystem to drive impact and insights that resonate across the country.”
Resh has built a global reputation as a scholar of executive politics, public personnel policy, civil service systems and the U.S. presidency. His award-winning research has appeared in top journals including the Public Administration Review, Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, Governance and Presidential Studies Quarterly.
His book, “Rethinking the Administrative Presidency” (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2015), earned both the Herbert A. Simon Best Book Award from the American Political Science Association and the Best Book Award in Public Administration Research from the American Society for Public Administration.
In addition to his research contributions, Resh has secured more than $800,000 in sponsored research funding and has received numerous recognitions for his collaborative data science work. His teaching and mentorship extend across multiple institutions and continents, including long-standing partnerships with public administration programs in Europe.
As chair, Resh will lead one of the nation’s top departments in public management and public policy, charged with implementing the Andrew Young School’s strategic plan in alignment with Georgia State University’s BluePrint to 2033: Our Place, Our Time. Key priorities include expanding undergraduate and graduate enrollments across graduate and undergraduate programs; leading the development of online degree programs; increasing sponsored research activity; and advancing innovative pathways for lifelong learning.
“Dr. Resh will steward the department’s commitment to all-embracing excellence in faculty development and mentorship and help sustain our NASPAA-accredited M.P.A. program,” Vicino said. “His expertise in faculty collaboration, interdisciplinary engagement and research-center leadership will be vital as the department continues to grow its impact locally, across Georgia, throughout the nation and beyond."
