DUNWOODY, Ga. – Malcolm Busin (A.S. '25) thrives on exploration.
Since moving to America as a teenager — by himself — from his home country France, the 23-year-old has worked as an au pair and traveled extensively throughout the U.S. In only three years, he has visited 15 states, including California, Colorado, Texas, Pennsylvania and New York. Busin has also journeyed to nearby countries, like Mexico and the Bahamas.
“I just love to travel,” he said.
In addition to piling up flight miles, Busin has kept busy studying business administration at Georgia State University’s Perimeter College. On May 8, he will graduate with an associate degree — and the joy of becoming the first in his family to graduate from college.
“I don’t know anybody in my hometown who went to college,” Busin said of growing up in a blue-collar area in northern France, near the Belgium border.
“So, I wanted to do something different. I wanted to break the cycle.”
Busin recalled being a young boy when he first dreamed of coming to the United States after watching movies about life in this country.
“Being an 8-year-old watching movies like ‘High School Musical,’ you can only dream about that fun, carefree life,” he said.
“The friendships, school spirit and everyday adventures made me think that the U.S. was like a dream come to life.”
The third born of seven siblings in a family with modest means, Busin decided that he’d pursue his dream of moving to United States just after graduating from high school in 2020. He’d already done the work to find an au pair position and started working in New Jersey.
In 2022, he left the Northeast after accepting an au pair position with another family — in Atlanta. That’s also when he turned his attention to his dream of attending college.
With the support of the family he worked for, Busin enrolled at Perimeter College.
At Perimeter, he took Honors College courses, thriving in smaller classes where he said he felt teachers really wanted him to succeed.
After graduating with his associate degree, Busin plans to transfer to Georgia State’s Atlanta Campus and work toward his bachelor’s degree. Eventually, he’d like to work in the investment banking field, but has no intention, now or later, of abandoning his passion for travel.
“I have a trip planned to Cancun at the end of the month, and I’m thrilled to check another city off my list. Exploring new cultures always excites me.”
