ATLANTA — Georgia State University is home to a busy and vibrant research community, making it one of the select institutions in the state awarded the R1 designation by the Carnegie Foundation. Throughout the year, its researchers have investigated and addressed vital questions across a broad range of fields, from health and wellness to culture and community, as well as issues related to the place and planet where we live. This research has not only built new knowledge but produced innovative tools and methods that make a real-world impact.
Here are some of the research stories from 2024 that showcase this powerful work:
- Georgia State University’s research community earned $185.72 million in research awards in fiscal year 2024, the second-highest total in university history.
- A cross-cutting set of internal grants from the Research, Innovation and Scholarly Excellence (Project RISE) initiative yielded 10 times the initial investment in external grant dollars, new discoveries and strong collaboration among GSU researchers.
- A team in Georgia State’s Kinesiology and Health Department is exploring how movement and language intersect for infants with Down syndrome.
- A Georgia State chemistry professor is leading a multi-institutional team of interdisciplinary scientists to fuel new paths to clean energy sources.
- A breakthrough in building HIV immunity comes courtesy of a surprising source: llama nanobodies.
- Advanced brain scans are helping GSU researchers uncover new ways to identify mental disorders.
