DUNWOODY, Ga. — Creativity comes naturally for Winnie Amani (A.S. ’24). If she’s not sewing or crocheting, she’s teaching herself to play guitar or piano.
This knack for learning new things and engaging in life is part of what Amani believes helped her succeed as an engineering pathway student at Georgia State University’s Perimeter College. On Dec. 19, she will join nearly 700 graduation candidates who’ll receive their associate degrees from the college.
“I am genuinely happy about what I have experienced as a Perimeter student and excited for what lies ahead,” Amani said.
At Perimeter, the native of the Democratic Republic of the Congo participated in the college’s Dunwoody Campus Engineering Club and Space Club. She also benefited from a number of student success resources provided by Perimeter.
“I realize how much I have grown, not only intellectually, but in many other areas of my life as well,” Amani said.
She added that Perimeter’s proximity to her home and smaller classes were a big draw.
“They allowed for a more personalized experience,” Amani said. “It was easier for me to reach out to the professors when needed, and I had the opportunity to make meaningful connections. Overall, I knew that Perimeter would be the ideal option for me to start my college journey.”
Amani took a critical thinking class from Associate Professor of Philosophy Jennifer Lobo Meeks during her final semester at Perimeter. Meeks calls her a “gem” student.
“I would put her in the top 2 to 3 percent of students in that particular class and across all of my classes,” Meeks said.
After graduating from Perimeter, Amani will work toward earning her bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering. She plans to attend Georgia Tech and keep up with her hobbies and passion projects.
“From an early age, I have always been passionate about designing things and putting my creativity to good use,” she said.
