ATLANTA — The American Society of Criminology (ASC) named Distinguished University Professor William J. Sabol a fellow of the organization during its annual meeting in San Francisco Nov. 14.
The recognition marks a significant milestone for both Sabol and the Department of Criminal Justice & Criminology at Georgia State University. Sabol is the first faculty member in the department’s history to receive this prestigious distinction while at Georgia State. Regents’ Professor Richard Wright was named an ASC fellow prior to joining the university.
Sabol’s research expertise spans corrections, sentencing policy and crime statistics. He brings a wealth of experience to his role with a career spanning 30 years across government, private-sector research institutions and academia. His notable positions include serving as the director of the Bureau of Justice Statistics. Sabol earned his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, and he was a Fulbright Scholar at Cambridge University’s Institute of Criminology.
“We are immensely proud of Bill Sabol, as this well-deserved recognition reflects his exceptional contributions to data-driven policy analysis, which has greatly influenced contemporary criminal justice systems and practices,” Interim Department Chair Eric Sevigny said. “His unwavering mentorship and dedication to supporting students and junior scholars have also played a pivotal role in nurturing the next generation of thought leaders in our field.”
