ATLANTA — Brandon Attell (M.A. '15, Ph.D. '21) has joined the faculty of Georgia State University’s School of Social Work (SSW) as a research assistant professor.
Attell brings more than a decade of research experience to his newest role within the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies, which houses the SSW. Prior to joining the faculty, he served as a senior research associate with the college’s Georgia Health Policy Center (GHPC). His research will continue to focus on enhancing healthcare data analytics to inform public health policy.
“We are excited to welcome Dr. Brandon Attell to the School of Social Work,” said SSW Director Joon Choi. “His extensive expertise in healthcare data analytics and public health policy, combined with his commitment to impactful research, will enhance our mission to address critical social and health issues in our communities.”
Attell’s early interest in research led to his first role as an undergraduate research assistant on a National Institutes of Health-funded project studying substance use among older adults in Atlanta’s suburbs. His academic path continued at Georgia State, where he contributed to a National Science Foundation-funded longitudinal study examining the public health impact of public housing demolition in Atlanta.
His additional experiences include roles as a 2nd Century Initiative Research Fellow at Georgia State, a scientific data analyst at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and various positions at the GHPC.
Attell served as principal investigator and co-investigator on projects totaling more than $5.5 million in grant funding, primarily from the CDC. His published work has appeared in journals such as Social Science Research, Advances in Medical Sociology and the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
He holds a Ph.D. in Research, Measurement and Statistics and an M.A. in Sociology from Georgia State University and a B.S. in Sociology from Kennesaw State University.
