ATLANTA — John Gunnells (M.P.A. ’18), who graduated with a concentration in policy analysis and evaluation, chose Georgia State University for its proximity to the state capital and its top 25 program ranking.
“I was very interested in public policy and wanted to learn it at an advanced level,” Gunnells said. “The Atlanta campus, being so close to the Capitol and state agencies, was a major draw.”
During his time at Georgia State, Gunnells maintained several internships including positions at the Governor’s Office of Planning and Budget, Association County Commissioners of Georgia and the Senate Budget and Evaluation Office. He credits Sharon Hill and Jim Martin, both clinical associate professors of public management and policy, now retired, for having a profound impact on his career progression.
Now serving as the senior manager of state affairs for the American Gas Association, Gunnells leads state regulatory affairs nationwide, engaging with regulators from Maine to Hawaii.
“I wouldn’t be in the position I am now if it weren’t for the competitive environment at GSU,” he said. “It made me want to work harder and be the best I could be.”
One of Gunnells’ proudest career milestones came in 2022 as the lead project manager in the launching of an educational resource, Investor Expectations on North American Natural Gas Utilities, which connects those who regulate natural gas utilities with the investment world. He did this in conjunction with the Canadian Gas Association.
Gunnells joined the AYS Alumni Council to give back to the institution that shaped him. He serves as a member of the Social and Civic Engagement Committee on the council.
“I wanted to make an impact on an institution that gave so much to me,” he said.
The decision to join the council was further fueled by the recent closure of his undergraduate institution, Birmingham Southern College.
“Don’t take for granted those moments you have to give back.”
Gunnells advises students to keep their options open and take full advantage of the career services office.
“Go early and go often,” he said.
In his time at AYS, he was urged to connect with alumni in his area on LinkedIn, a strategy that helped him find a mentor who significantly propelled his career forward.
He emphasized the limitless opportunities available at AYS due to its location.
“You’re positioned in proximity to all these organizations that play such a pivotal role on the national and international stage,” he said.
As Gunnells continues to shape energy policy across the nation, he hopes his journey from student to industry leader will serve as an inspiration to all students, current and prospective.
