CLARKSTON, Ga.—Perimeter College at Georgia State University marked its 60-year anniversary Sept. 17-Oct. 1 with an impressive lineup of events and activities for faculty, staff, students and community partners.
To commemorate its milestone 60th birthday, each of the five Perimeter College campuses staged signature events that showcased the decades-long tradition of Perimeter providing transformative access, community and impact to students and other stakeholders.
Part of the anniversary included a well-attended culminating event on Clarkston Campus which featured a State of Georgia proclamation dedicated to the college by Georgia State Representative and Perimeter College alumna Sam Park (’02-’05). The program also featured musical renditions of alma maters for DeKalb College Georgia Perimeter College, previous names for Perimeter College, along with a newly commissioned piece as well as an artwork showcase and readings by students.
Another anniversary highlight focused on the ribbon cutting for Perimeter’s new, $6.3 million Dental Hygiene Clinic on Dunwoody Campus. More than 200 attendees, including Georgia State and college leadership and community supporters, participated in the occasion.
A Jubilee Carnival (Alpharetta Campus), Bicycle Trail Ride/Festival of Friendship, Food and Fun (Decatur Campus), 60th Anniversary Celebration (Dunwoody) and Day Fest (Newton Campus) are among the other celebrations that marked the college’s anniversary. A 60th anniversary tree planting volunteer service project in collaboration with Trees Atlanta has been re-scheduled for Oct. 25 on Perimeter’s Decatur Campus.
“Perimeter College is celebrating 60 years of transforming lives, with thousands of alumni launching their careers and growing with us,” said Barbara J. Johnson, Perimeter College dean.
“Our dedication to student success and access remains as strong today as it was in 1964. We look forward to making a difference in the lives of students for the next 60 years.”
Perimeter College has remained committed to its mission as an access college since opening its doors in 1964 as DeKalb College. In 2016, the college consolidated with Georgia State University, making it one of the largest universities in the nation while more than doubling graduation rates at the college.
