ATLANTA — Jan Ivery has been appointed associate dean for academic affairs in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University.
In her new role, Ivery will lead the college’s portfolio of academic programs across bachelor’s, certificate, master’s and doctoral programs with a strategic focus on growth and innovation. She will also lead a new task force on strategic program growth for the college in collaboration with faculty, staff and stakeholders.
“Dr. Ivery brings to this position a long-standing commitment to the advancement of leaders to strengthen our communities and a forward-looking, innovative vision for higher education in the 21st century,” Dean Thomas J. Vicino said in announcing Ivery’s appointment. “She is well positioned to lead our academic programs as an educator, scholar and recognized leader in her field.”
Ivery has served as interim associate dean for academic affairs in the college since June 2023. Previously, she served the college as assistant dean for academic programs, interim director of the School of Social Work and director of the Center for Collaborative Social Work. She is also a recent graduate of Georgia State’s Leadership Academy for Women Faculty.
Since joining the Office of the Dean, Ivery has led impactful initiatives across the college’s academic programs in support of student success. She has supported the scaling of recruitment and enrollment initiatives, collaborated on the reorganization of the Office of Academic Assistance and planned new interdisciplinary program offerings.
During the pandemic, Ivery developed and managed the Peer Coach Initiative to promote online student engagement, and she coordinated and facilitated focus groups with faculty as part of President M. Brian Blake’s 100 Days Student Success Committee.
An associate professor in the School of Social Work, Ivery conducts research and teaches in the areas of community development and macro social work practice. She focuses her research on community partnerships, community and organizational capacity, and service delivery associated with homelessness and gerontology. Her research on collaborative partnerships and practice with various client populations complements her teaching in human development, case management, communication and cultural diversity courses, and field education. Ivery has published articles in journals that include Administration and Social Work, Journal of Gerontological Social Work, Journal of Sociology and Social Welfare, and Journal of Community Practice. Additionally, her contributions to the Council on Social Work Education have had a positive impact in the field and throughout the profession.
Ivery holds a B.A. from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, an M.S.W. from the University of Pittsburgh and a Ph.D. from Virginia Commonwealth University.
“As we prepare to strategically advance our college initiatives in alignment with Georgia State University’s ‘Blueprint to 2033: Our Place, Our Time,’ Dr. Ivery’s appointment marks an important milestone in the development of a leadership team in the college,” Vicino said.
