Yizra Ghebre edged out tens of thousands of students from across the nation to nab one of this year’s coveted Gates Millennium scholarships—and he couldn’t be happier.
The 17-year-old graduated May 6 from Georgia State University’s Perimeter College, a couple of weeks before receiving his high school diploma from the DeKalb Early College Academy. A total of 54 students graduated from DECA on May 21, with 28 of them—like Ghebre—also earning an associate degree from Perimeter College.
The Gates Millennium Scholars program is a national scholarship funded by a $1.6 billion grant from Bill and Melinda Gates. The award removes financial barriers so that high-performing students such as Ghebre can attend any college they wish on full scholarship until they receive their doctorate, if desired.
Ghebre is one of 1,000 recipients selected from a pool of 53,000 applicants.
