The holidays often bring jam-packed schedules filled with on-the-run meals, fat-laden foods and a lively party circuit. It is possible, however, to balance healthy options and holiday indulgences, says Rodney Pegues, assistant director for Recreational Services at Georgia State University’s Perimeter College. Here are his four strategies:
1. Keep it moving. It’s easy to throw in a 30-minute walk while you’re at the mall. You could schedule 30 minutes just before or after you shop. Integrate those extra steps into your holiday shopping.
2. Consider preparing a meatless meal. There are great vegetables this time of year. Make sure they make it into your menu. This will provide some balance to your diet.
3. Back off the sweets. Instead of having the cakes and the cookies, try blended smoothies or spritzers. Juice with a little ginger ale makes a great sweet treat. Smoothies work well this time of year, too. Prepare them, leave them in the freezer and then when you want them, you have a nice smoothie ready to go.
4. Snack well. Make your own healthy trail mix. Include ingredients such as granola, pretzels, sunflowers seeds and dried fruit. This is a great project to do with the children or the grandkids. Plus, it’s quick and easy.
