Alicia D. Mack (J.D. ’13)
Firm: The Mack Law Firm, LLC
Specialty: Personal injury, workers’ compensation (adding Grandparent Adoptions, Criminal Expungements, and Eviction Defense through the Lawyers for Equal Justice program)
Community Involvement: Member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Georgia Trial Lawyers Association (GTLA), Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys (GABWA)
Mack grew up in a small, rural Tennessee town. Her mother, a factory worker, sustained multiple work-related injuries throughout her life.
"I have experienced the workers’ compensation system first-hand, and therefore understand the trickle-down problems that my clients face because of their injury," she said. "The decreased earnings lead to financial problems, marital strain, and often depression."
Mack knew she wanted to be a lawyer from a young age, and her experiences reinforced her motivation.
Just as strong as her desire to serve as a lawyer, is her desire to give back to the community. Mack is on the board of directors for the nonprofit Beauty in Me, Inc. which helps build self-esteem in young girls. She also donates 10 percent of her fees from each case to several charities.
“I believe it's important for successful women to give back to their communities—especially those who, like me, have exited the cycle of poverty,” she said.
She looks forward to learning at Lawyers for Equal Justice how to use her legal expertise to serve her community in more ways.
“I’m excited about it because on my own, I lack the resources required to build a profitable sliding scale practice,” Mack said. “Beforehand, my volunteer work and my life as a lawyer were separate, now I feel like they are merged together; I am using my law degree to help the underserved and it's a great business decision as well.”
