Name: Katherine Krapivnaya
Hometown: Alpharetta, Georgia
Expected date of graduation: Spring 2027
Which concentration did you choose, and why?
My concentration is in Population Health Sciences, which centers around collection and analysis of data and the application of this knowledge toward improving the lives of communities. I felt that this sort of education would teach me the skills to create effective, evidence-backed solutions with the aim of improving health on a large scale.
Why did you choose to major in public health?
I chose to major in public health because I have always questioned why some people seem to live healthy, carefree lives and why others run into health problems at every turn. Discovering which factors play the most significant roles in human health seemed like it would help me find an answer. My studies have taught me about underlying causes of diseases and about methods for combatting health disparities to provide all people with the opportunities to take charge of their health.
What has been your favorite public health class at Georgia State, and why?
My favorite class at Georgia State has been “Health Equity and Disparities,” which introduced me to the idea that seemingly small factors or those that are unrelated to health can actually make a world of difference in health outcomes. The class was designed in a discussion-based manner, allowing students to improve speaking skills while learning from those around them. I found this class format very engaging and feel that it marked a significant difference in my educational experience.
Tell us about your campus involvement?
I am a member of Georgia State’s Honors College and Undergraduate Public Health Club, which have provided me with the chance to connect with other scholars in my field. Additionally, I am currently on the MeTa Series planning committee and am excited to contribute to the organization of a valuable educational and networking event.
Where is your favorite place on campus?
I do not have one specific preferred location on campus and instead I find myself searching for places of high student activity. Being surrounded by a lively group of people boosts my mood and reminds me of the beauty of being human.
What advice do you have for incoming students?
I would advise incoming students to dream big and actively seek out opportunities to make those dreams a reality. Georgia State is filled with professors, advisors and offices all devoted to supporting the aspirations of their students by helping them locate resources and navigate complex systems that may appear daunting at first glance.
What’s your career aspiration?
I am currently looking for a chance to add a global dimension to my studies by hopefully pursuing a master’s degree abroad. Learning about systems and perspectives outside of the one that I am familiar with will allow me to see which problems different societies share and uncover alternative ways of solving them. I also plan to attend law school with the goal of using the knowledge I have gathered to shape health policy.
