ATLANTA — S. Tamer Cavusgil, a world-renowned international business scholar who has significantly advanced the theory and practice of global strategy, emerging markets, and the evolution of the middle class in rapidly transforming economies, has been awarded the 2026 International Management Hyundai Eminent Scholar Award by the Academy of Management. The Eminent Scholar Award recognizes lifetime achievement in international management scholarship.
A Regents’ Professor, Fuller E. Callaway Professorial Chair, and executive director of the Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER-GSU) at Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business, Cavusgil is one of the most influential and widely cited researchers in international business. He is also an elected Fellow and current Dean of the Academy of International Business. To date, Cavusgil has mentored over 40 doctoral students, who have gone on to become successful academics at major business schools around the world.
“Tamer Cavusgil’s lifetime achievements as a researcher have made significant impacts on international management,” said Richard Phillips, dean of Georgia State’s Robinson College of Business. “He is admired and respected by students, business leaders, and peer academics in his field for his extraordinary contributions. We are proud to see Tamer receive this well-deserved recognition.”
Cavusgil is the author or coauthor of more than 200 refereed journal articles and two dozen books about the discipline, including its leading textbook, “International Business, Strategy, Management, and the New Realities” (6th Edition;Pearson). He also has served on the editorial boards of leading academic journals, including as founding editor of the Journal of International Marketing, now published by the American Marketing Association, and co-editor of Rutgers Business Review, a practitioner journal.
“What truly sets Tamer apart is not just his scholarship, but the genuine warmth and generosity he shows to students and junior colleagues who cross his path. He has a gift for seeing potential in people and nurturing it with patience and encouragement, said Leigh Anne Liu, director of Robinson’s Institute for International Business. “Whether offering feedback on a dissertation or opening doors to professional networks, Tamer invests in people the way he invests in ideas. The academic community he has built around him is a direct reflection of his character.”
Joining Georgia State in 2008, Cavusgil also holds a B.S. in business and economics from Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, and an MBA and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. He also has received honorary doctorates from the University of Hasselt in Belgium (2014), the University of Southern Denmark (2017), and Hong Kong Metropolitan University (2025).
