ATLANTA — Georgia State University’s Perimeter College has been recognized as a Gilman Program 25th Anniversary Top Producing Institution, placing it among the nation’s leading associate degree-granting colleges for global learning access.
The Gilman Scholarship, funded by the U.S. Department of State, supports Pell Grant–eligible students in studying or interning abroad. The Gilman Program provides up to $5,000 in merit-based scholarships to outstanding American undergraduate students. These opportunities equip Gilman Scholars with international experience, global networks and foreign language skills essential to advancing the U.S. economic competitiveness and national security.
Last year, 26 Perimeter students received a Gilman scholarship and participated in study‑abroad programs across the world where they engaged in learning experiences that deepened their cultural understanding and strengthened academic and career pathways. Many recipients were first‑generation college students, working adults or students who traveled internationally for the first time.
"We are delighted our students are reaping the rewards, with approximately one out of four Perimeter applicants winning a Gilman scholarship.” said Perimeter College Dean Barbara Johnson. “Receiving this scholarship creates a pathway for students who otherwise might not be able to travel abroad to be able to do so."
Perimeter’s high rank reflects Georgia State’s commitment to expanding international opportunities for students and reducing barriers to global education, she added.
"Perimeter’s International Initiatives team and the faculty who lead study abroad programs have worked hard over the past few years to increase the profile of this scholarship," Johnson said.
To date, 263 Georgia State students have received Gilman scholarships. Juan Manuel Chavez is one such student who shared the benefits the scholarships provide.
“The Gilman scholarship made it possible for me to study abroad in Cape Town, South Africa, an experience that profoundly shaped my academic and personal growth,” he said. “As a first-generation college student from a low-income background with immigrant parents, Gilman opened the door for me to engage with global perspectives on history, social justice and community resilience in ways that will directly inform my future career in public service. I would encourage every student to apply because opportunities like this truly expand what you believe is possible for your future.”
