Dean Barbara Johnson and Nadia Threats, Director of Development, welcomed longtime Perimeter College supporter Ben Tovrog, Ph.D., to campus for a special meeting in October.
The Tovrog family has funded scholarships for Perimeter students since 2013. The special meeting celebrated their 100th student scholarship and marked an incredible impact on student success.
After retiring from a 25-year career in the chemical industry, Ben Tovrog, Ph.D. started teaching chemistry and working in the Learning and Tutoring Center (LTC) at Perimeter in 2002. He has referred to his second career as “richly fulfilling” because he helped students grow and succeed while realizing his dream of becoming a teacher.
During the meeting, Tovrog was presented with a book composed of all 100 impact reports, handwritten thank you notes and other mementos from scholarship recipients.
Professors Claudia Vargas and Brandi Childress led a group of 25 Perimeter College students through a hands-on immersion trip to the Neuroscience Institute at Georgia State University’s Atlanta Campus on Friday, Oct. 24. The goal of the trip was to foster student success and exploration beyond the classroom.
The program included a career exploration talk, attendance at a graduate research seminar, tours of active research and teaching labs and a closing session with CASA that highlights academic and professional support resources.
The trip gave students a first-hand view of GSU’s research environment and graduate opportunities. Students were able to gain an insider’s view of a thriving neuroscience program while networking with faculty members and other students. The visit allowed Perimeter advising staff, Andrea Judith Catchings and Carl Leory Hamlin, Jr., an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the program so they can better support interested students as they prepare to transition into the Neuroscience major on the Atlanta campus. The trip also allowed Perimeter faculty a chance to collaborate with Neuroscience Institute faculty and to strengthen the connection between Perimeter and the Atlanta campus.
