ATLANTA ‒ Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business will launch a Master of Interdisciplinary Studies (MIS) with a focus on actuarial science, artificial intelligence (AI), and information systems in spring 2026. The three-semester program responds to the growing demand for professionals with a strong foundation in actuarial science enhanced by AI and the data and technology skills that drive modern insurance and risk management.
AI and machine learning are transforming how actuaries perform core functions such as pricing, reserving, and risk assessment. The MIS program equips students with essential AI and information systems skills through applied projects, ensuring graduates are prepared for the technology and data-driven demands of today’s actuarial roles.
“The market demands actuaries who can use cutting-edge AI tools in building models and analyzing data. At the same time, firms are collecting and managing unprecedented volumes of information, making it essential to pair actuarial expertise with strong data and analytics skills. This program prepares graduates for these technology-intensive actuarial roles that are redefining the industry,” said Stephen Shore, director of Robinson’s Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Science.
Graduates of the program gain expertise in AI, data science, and risk modeling, along with preparation for professional actuarial exams. The 30-hour program consists of 21 hours of required courses and 9 hours of electives, enabling students to tailor their studies. Most students complete the program in three semesters.
The program is offered in-person or online, with online tuition rates the same for all students, regardless of location. “This flexibility opens doors for students across the country who want a high-quality degree at an affordable cost, without relocating,” Shore added.
“The launch of the new MIS program represents a significant step forward in preparing the next generation of actuarial professionals to meet the evolving demands of our industry,” said Sean Ringsted, Chief Digital Business and Chief Analytics Officer at Chubb. “Graduates will be uniquely equipped to tackle complex challenges, drive innovation, and deliver insights that are critical to modern insurance and risk management.”
“Our top priority at Robinson is developing students into generative AI leaders in the marketplace. This new degree is one of several college initiatives to ensure our graduates are on the cutting-edge of AI and proficient in the technology skills employers demand,” said Richard Phillips, dean of the Robinson College.
The M.R. Greenberg School of Risk Science is a top-ranked actuarial program. It is recognized at the gold level by the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) and as a University-Earned Credit institution by the Society of Actuaries, covering exams in financial mathematics, fundamentals of actuarial mathematics, and statistics for risk modeling. The School is ranked No. 3 in North America and No. 15 globally for research productivity in the leading actuarial and insurance journals.
