ATLANTA- The S.S. Huebner Foundation for Insurance Education, renowned for its support of doctoral students studying risk management and insurance, will merge with the Georgia State University Foundation and continue its operations as a program of the Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Science in Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business.
The Huebner Foundation has been a beacon of excellence in advancing insurance and risk management education for decades. Founded in the 1940s to honor Dr. Solomon S. Huebner, a Wharton School faculty member and pioneer of collegiate insurance education, the foundation has played a transformative role in shaping the discipline of insurance. Its mission focuses on supporting the next generation of scholars in risk management and insurance and driving innovative research to propel the industry forward.
Over the past eight decades, the foundation has cultivated more than 200 Huebner Fellows, enabling them to embark on distinguished academic careers. Remarkably, Huebner alumni provide approximately one-third of all collegiate insurance education in the United States, collectively providing thousands of years of educational service and instructing thousands of students annually.
In 2012, the trustees of the S.S. Huebner Foundation for Insurance Education decided to relocate the foundation to the Department of Risk Management and Insurance at Georgia State University. Now, merging with the Georgia State University Foundation will ensure Dr. Huebner’s vision continues to thrive by allowing Huebner Foundation programs - including doctoral fellowships, the Center for Economic Analysis of Risk (CEAR)-Huebner Summer Risk Institute, and the American Risk and Insurance Association (ARIA) Doctoral Colloquium – to continue with enhanced operational and financial support.
This significant step aligns with the Huebner Foundation's mission while capitalizing on the strengths of the M.R. Greenberg School of Risk Science. The Greenberg School is distinguished by its acclaimed academic programs, internationally renowned research faculty, and enhanced resources, bolstered by a $15 million gift from the Starr Foundation in 2023. Together, these elements reflect a shared commitment to advancing risk management education and research.
Under the stewardship of Georgia State University Foundation, the Huebner endowment will remain committed to its purpose of supporting doctoral education in risk management and insurance. Its funds will remain restricted for their intended purpose, ensuring the legacy of Dr. Huebner thrives while empowering future scholars and driving innovation in the field.
“We are excited to integrate the Huebner Foundation’s work into the M.R. Greenberg School’s innovative ecosystem, designed to provide high-quality education to students from diverse backgrounds and prepare them for thriving careers in high-demand, risk-related careers,” said Richard Phillips, dean of the Robinson College of Business, Huebner Foundation fellow, and board member. “This collaboration promises to attract a new generation of scholars, foster groundbreaking research, and strengthen the talent pipeline for the global insurance industry.”
“The merger symbolizes a new chapter for foundation – one that preserves its storied history while embracing a future of growth and expanded impact,” said C. Robert Henrikson, Huebner Foundation chairman of the board and retired president and CEO of MetLife Inc. “We extend our gratitude to the countless individuals and organizations that have supported the foundation over the years. Together, we will continue to honor Dr. Huebner’s enduring legacy by empowering the next century of leaders in risk management and insurance education.”
