ATLANTA — Proma Kansagra, a Biomedical Science and Enterprise bachelor’s program student in Georgia State University’s Institute for Biomedical Sciences (IBMS), has been awarded the Shanthi Sitaraman Student Award. She will participate in a summer research internship focused on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
After completing the internship, Kansagra will receive a $2,500 award and present her research during the IBMS Digestive Disease Research Day at the end of August.
The Shanthi Sitaraman Student Award was established to provide a summer internship in the IBD field to a selected IBMS undergraduate student and was made possible by generous donations to the Shanthi V. Sitaraman Intestinal Pathobiology Endowment. The summer internship consists of lectures and laboratory experiments in IBMS labs designed to give the student both a conceptual and practical understanding of IBD. Kansagra is the first recipient of the Shanthi Sitaraman Student Award.
“I’m incredibly honored to be the first recipient of the Shanthi Sitaraman Student Award,” she said. “As a senior at Georgia State University studying Biomedical Science and Enterprise, this recognition and research opportunity will play a vital role in helping me pursue my goal of contributing to advancements in gastrointestinal health.
“I was drawn to this area of research because of its potential to significantly improve patient outcomes and quality of life,” Kansagra added. “I’m truly grateful for the support and encouragement this award represents.”
