The American Educational Research Association (AERA) has announced the selection of 29 exemplary scholars as 2025 AERA Fellows, including Georgia State University Professor Joyce King.
The AERA Fellows Program honors scholars for their exceptional contributions to, and excellence in, education research. Nominated by their peers, the 2025 Fellows were selected by the Fellows Committee and approved by the AERA Council, the association’s elected governing body.
King is the Benjamin E. Mays Endowed Chair for Urban Teaching, Learning and Leadership in the College of Education & Human Development and an affiliated faculty in the Department of Africana Studies, the Institute for Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies and the Urban Studies Institute at Georgia State University. Previously, she held senior academic affairs positions as Provost at Spelman College, associate provost at Medgar Evers College, CUNY and associate vice chancellor for academic affairs and diversity programs at the University of New Orleans. She was the director of teacher education for 12 years at Santa Clara University and the first head of the Ethnic Studies Department at Mills College.
Widely respected in the fields of urban education and the sociology of education, King’s research has contributed to the knowledge-base on preparing teachers for diversity and curriculum theorizing through her scholarship, teaching practice and leadership. She served on the curriculum commission of the state Board of Education. King has lectured in educational and community organizations in the U.S., Brazil, Canada, England, Mali, Senegal, Japan, Jamaica and New Zealand. She has shared her expertise in diversity transformation as a training consultant with civic and human rights organizations and higher education institutions in the U.S. and abroad. She is a past-president of AERA and was elected to the National Academy of Education.
King and the other AERA Fellows will be inducted during a ceremony at the 2025 Annual Meeting in Denver, Colo., on April 24. With this cohort, there will be a total of 791 AERA Fellows.
“The 2025 AERA Fellows join a brilliant group of scholars, and they are most deserving of this honor,” said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine. “Their significant contributions to the education research field demonstrate the highest standards of academic excellence and scholarship.”
