ATLANTA — Alejandro del Valle, an expert on catastrophic risk events and disaster economics, has been appointed to the New York Life Professorship at Georgia State University's J. Mack Robinson College of Business.
Del Valle is an associate professor in the Maurice R. Greenberg School of Risk Science, where he directs its Ph.D. program. His research examines the economic impact of natural disasters and explores how markets and government policies can mitigate losses. His work appears in leading economics, finance, and science journals, including the American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
"Alejandro del Valle's expertise in the consequences of catastrophic events and natural disasters and their impact on mortality and economic outcomes aligns well with the evolving priorities of the insurance industry. Because his work directly addresses these critical issues, Alejandro is the ideal scholar to appoint to the New York Life Professorship," said Richard Phillips, dean of the Robinson College.
Del Valle's research has attracted public attention from media outlets including The New York Times, CNN, and VoxDev. He has shared his findings at prominent international institutions such as the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, and the United Nations Climate Change Conference. His insights have influenced policy discussions on indexed disaster funds and disaster risk financing.
Alejandro del Valle joined Georgia State in 2015. He holds a doctorate in economics from the Paris School of Economics (EHESS).
Established in 2001, the New York Life Professorship supports research and teaching excellence in risk management and insurance at Georgia State.
