ATLANTA — S. Tamer Cavusgil, a world-renowned international business scholar who has significantly advanced the theory and practice of global strategy, emerging markets, and the evolution of the middle class in rapidly transforming economies, has been awarded an honorary doctorate by Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU).
A Regents’ Professor, Fuller E. Callaway Professorial Chair, and executive director of the Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER-GSU) at Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business, Cavusgil is one of the most influential and widely cited researchers in international business.
HKMU bestowed the honorary doctorate on Cavusgil in recognition of his “legacy of exceptional scholarship, mentorship, and advocacy,” noting that “he stands as a beacon of intellectual inspiration, demonstrating how the careful nurturing of minds can ignite flames that burn bright across generations.”
Cavusgil joined Georgia State in 2008. He is the author or coauthor of more than 200 refereed journal articles and two dozen books about the discipline, including its leading textbook, “International Business, Strategy, Management, and the New Realities” (Pearson). He also has served on the editorial boards of leading academic journals, including as founding editor of the Journal of International Marketing and co-editor of Rutgers Business Review, a practitioner journal. According to Google Scholar, Cavusgil’s work had received more than 63,000 citations as of early 2025.

An elected fellow and dean of fellows for the Academy of International Business , Tamer Cavusgil holds a B.S. in business and economics from Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey, and an MBA and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. He also has received honorary doctorates from the University of Hasselt in Belgium (2014) and the University of Southern Denmark (2017).
