ATLANTA—Georgia State University’s College of Arts & Sciences secured $46.8 million in research awards during the 2024 fiscal year, marking a 17.5 percent increase over the previous year. This achievement surpasses the college’s prior record of $42.4 million, set in fiscal year 2020.
“Our collective achievement underscores our commitment to advancing knowledge and addressing critical issues through groundbreaking research,” said Lindsey Cohen, interim dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. “This accomplishment also signals that funding agencies recognize the value and potential of our scholars’ work.”
Three of the college’s departments — Computer Science, Psychology and Chemistry — ranked among the top 10 university-wide for research awards. Additionally, two Arts & Sciences faculty members were among the university’s top-funded principal investigators: Distinguished University Professor of Psychology Vince Calhoun, director of the Center for Translational Research in Neuroimaging and Data Science (TReNDS Center), and Professor of Physics & Astronomy Stuart Jefferies.
The college’s success in securing research funding has been driven in large part by an increase in mid-sized grants of $1 million or less across a diverse array of disciplines.
“This record-breaking year in research funding reflects the outstanding scholarship of our world-class faculty who are at the forefront of generating and disseminating innovative and impactful knowledge across the natural and computational sciences, social and behavioral sciences, and the humanities,” said Dan Cox, associate dean for research and graduate studies in the college. “Their work continues to elevate the college’s reputation as a hub of excellence and innovation.”
University-wide, Georgia State researchers brought in $185.72 million in sponsored funding during the 2024 fiscal year, the second-highest total in the university’s history. More than 1,300 projects received funding, with 26 investigators securing awards of $1 million or more. Notably, half of the university’s top 10 grant recipients are women.
The College of Arts & Sciences remains committed to fostering a research environment that supports groundbreaking discoveries and impactful scholarship, positioning Georgia State University as a leader in addressing the most pressing challenges of our time.
