ATLANTA — Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business announces two faculty appointed as Regents’ Professors by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia (USG). Regents’ Professorships are bestowed on USG’s most distinguished faculty, whose scholarly achievements are recognized nationally and internationally as innovative and renowned.
Balasubramaniam (Bala) Ramesh, Distinguished University Professor and Chair of the Department of Computer Information Systems (CIS), Balasubramaniam (Bala) Ramesh, has been appointed as a Regents’ Professor. Ramesh, who also holds the George E. Smith Eminent Scholar’s Chair, is globally recognized as one of the top 1.2 percent of researchers in information systems based on career impact. In 2023, he received the Impact Award from the Association for Information Systems for the significant influence of his research on the practice of information systems.
Ramesh's pioneering work on applying AI to support systems development laid the foundation for several commercial tools, including Siemens Product Lifecycle Management, used by nearly 5,000 large organizations worldwide. His research has primarily focused on modeling and supporting knowledge-intensive activities in complex organizational contexts, particularly in developing systems using AI tools and methods. His work has been published in over 120 refereed outlets, including major journals and international conferences. The impact of Ramesh’s research is further underscored by the numerous research grants he has received throughout his career, totaling nearly $16 million.
During his tenure at Georgia State, Ramesh has won every major teaching award at the university, most notably the USG Board of Regents Hall of Fame Teaching Excellence Award. He has mentored students across a diverse range of programs at the undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels. Under his leadership, several programs and the CIS Department have risen to national acclaim.
S. Tamer Cavusgil, Fuller E. Callaway Professorial Chair and executive director of Georgia State’s Center for International Business and Research, was reappointed as a Regents’ Professor. Cavusgil, who joined Georgia State in 2008, is a world-renowned educator, scholar, mentor, journal editor, institution builder, leader of professional societies, and advisor to senior executives and international agencies.
Cavusgil’s scholarship on internationalizing firms, exporting, global strategy, and multinationalism has placed him among the most prolific international business authors. He is an elected Fellow and a past vice president of the Academy of International Business, as well as a past elected president of the Association of International Business Education and Research and Gianni and Joan Montezemolo Visiting Chair at the University of Cambridge. Cavusgil is the senior author of the leading text “International Business: The New Realities” (Pearson Education) and author or co-author of more than 200 referred journal articles.
“Both Tamer and Bala have made profound impacts on society as a whole through their scholarly achievements and service and dedication to their research, their students, and the university,” said Richard D. Phillips, dean of the Robinson College of Business. “To have two Regents’ Professors appointed this year at Robinson is a testament to the quality and commitment of our faculty.”
